Velma: the show no one asked for

So, the year is 2023. Where most content is either a remake of something that was once popular, and they butcher it by trying to be woke and please everyone. The funny thing about including everyone is the audience who wants to be represented doesn’t even support the cause. If you try to please everyone, then you end up pleasing no one. The monstrosity of a show called Velma is what this post is about. You take the characters we once loved growing up, and butcher their entire existence. The show tries to be overwhelmingly funny and mature. It reminds me of a rip-off Rick & Morty that’s not nearly as entertaining. The first episode Velma is accused of murdering someone because she is found dead in her locker, and the two detectives have a highschooler solve a mystery because they are too lazy to do so themselves. The show is extremely sexual and mature for a Scooby-doo show, but it tries to please the Gen Z audience.

Fred, who’s the leader of the Mystery Inc. group he becomes a laughingstock for people of color. I’m not sure if it’s because he’s a white male or not, but I do find it offensive how they diminish his existence. He’s a bumbling fool, kind of like how men are portrayed in TV shows in general. The show depicts him as a child who is incompetent and can’t do anything without his parents’ approval. Although Fred solves many mysteries on his own and the current depiction of him makes me question if he will ever solve anything again.

Velma for example is now apart of the LGBTQ community when the original show in the 80’s she wasn’t. Severing the relationship between her and Shaggy. They even made her an Indian woman…. when she was originally a white woman. This show just seems as if Mindy Kaling is trying to live vicariously through a TV show. I hate when shows try to please an audience, it really ruins their character. But, the saying exists for a reason. Once you go woke, you go broke.

Shaggy aka Norville is a simp and doesn’t respect himself. He’s extremely too clingly to Velma. She doesn’t like men anymore so he’s wasting his time. When you don’t respect yourself, I guess you have all the time in the world. Also, he’s a black guy now and not a white male so he’s character went down the drain with the show. He does any and everything for Velma who won’t even look in his direction unless she needs something.

Daphne, when it comes to her character, I can only think of a sexual object simply because of how she’s portrayed. She’s a hot character who is popular amongst her peers. She’s a kleptomaniac and her parents are both lesbian cops who thought Velma was a murderer. She is also a drug dealer who sales to her peers. With his being said, she’s dating Fred who has no backbone for himself and doesn’t think he’s a man because he’s a late bloomer. Daphne and Velma held hands for a nanosecond and instantly felt a connection deeper than before.
